city. to give you that context, there are a little over 200,000 parcels, making up 31,000 acres of land in the city, that's excluding the streets which of course the city also controls. so, of those parcels, 2000 of them are in ownership by the city of san francisco. that's almost 6,000 acres, actually it's a little more than 6,000 acres. that means we have ownership of 20% of the acreage within the city and county of san francisco. we also own land far beyond the city. i'll get into that in a bit. but 92,000 acres of land is owned outside of the county. so, our portfolio is not only diverse, it's vast. so, that's speaking to the land mass that we own when we talk about the buildings that we control, we have over 1,100 separate buildings over seven counties. that's totaling about 48 million square feet of improvements throughout that entire portfolio. and interestingly, 85% of that 48 million square feet is controlled by seven different departments. so, the majority -- and you see the pie c

that is where the city had the sugar import section. we were a big importer of sugar. those were envisioned and pioneered to be built with reinforced concrete to make them fireproof. ironically in 1984 the buildings on top of the piers burnt down but pier itself survived. in 1987 there was a proposal for development on 30, 32. by my count this is the sixth proposal to do some sort of significant development on peers 30 and 32. that is completely unique to this site, unlike no other project the port has done. as the port director, something that gives me great pause. we spent a lot of time as you brought up this morning supervisor avalos during the america's cup event authority lookinging at that pier in more detail and we determined there is an expensive proposition to remove, let alone try to rehabilitate it. it is sitting pier for us. as mentioned naturally deep berth. that is the whole reason the port exists on the western side is because we have naturally deep berths and can take advantage of that for the benefit so it is important to us. next door we are building

and i think we all support the city supporting our schools. i do have concerns about the use of the state reserve, and very supportive of using the children's funds -- the set pretty easy one. i have concerns about the reserve particularly for the reasons that supervisor farrell expressed doing this now, when we still have uncertainties on the state and particularly the federal level. and i understand the debate about the rainy day fund. but from my perspective, you know, the voters have passed these various funds, prop h, rainy day fumgd, to provide funding to the school district. some of that money is supposed to be restricted particularly around prop h, but for the rainy day fund the whole point is for problem budget years for the school district to be able to make its choices about how it spends that money. so, you know, i guess if there were no rainy day money, and it was just depleted and there was no way that money was not going to the school district, that would be a conversation to have. but since we quo that there -- know there's mor

how do we -- the city, maintain a committee of able and committed members? as it stands the committee is all volunteer. the workload as of now are far too labor intensive to be sustained by a volunteer board. so as you just suggested perhaps staggering terms would be an excellent idea. but this is just one issue. the officers have collectively identified a number of issues and large-scale questions, but i believe we're at a point that some changes need to be made. first the committee need goes through some major changes such as do the standards of care continue to make sense at this time? they did at one time. but it might not make sense anymore and how can we as a committee without teeth enforce standards of care? how can we expect shelters to meet standards of care when they are unfunded? and what is a just penalty for non-compliance? certainly it doesn't make sense to fine somebody for not having enough money. so my purpose again is not to [pr-erpbt/] present frustration, but suggest a change and the committee will need the support of this committee going
